Chapter Leader Profile: Rich Sobine, CFE
/President and Chairman of the Board, Philadelphia Area Chapter #24
Richard "Rich" Sobine, CFE, has served on the board of directors for the Philadelphia Area Chapter continuously since he helped form the chapter in 1991. Currently the president and chairman of the board, Sobine has worked tirelessly to promote the ACFE and the CFE credential in the Philadelphia area.
Sobine considers being a husband and a father to four daughters to be his greatest achievement, and when not working as a manager at WithumSmith+Brown, PC or tending to chapter business, he enjoys traveling, spending time with his family and watching his favorite college basketball team, the Orange of Syracuse University.
What are the benefits of serving as a chapter leader?
Serving as a chapter leader is very rewarding. As chapter president and a member of the board of directors I am able to help plan and provide excellent training and networking opportunities for our chapter members. I have the opportunity to speak to different groups, including many student groups, about the benefits of being a CFE and the job opportunities available to CFEs.
What goals would you like to help the chapter accomplish during your time on the board?
I would like to educate our members and the public about how to detect and deter fraud and increase chapter membership by getting the word out as to who we are and what we do. I would also like to encourage our members (especially the younger members) to volunteer and get involved in the chapter’s many committees and events by becoming a part of the chapter leadership.
Do you have any advice for other chapter leaders?
As chapter leaders we are expected to coordinate and organize all of the functions and events of the chapter. To do so you must be dedicated to the cause and be willing to spend the time necessary to properly administer chapter duties. This includes making a strong commitment to do a great job and leading by example. You must also be a good listener and consensus builder in order to have a successful board and chapter. Also always remember to maintain a sense of humor!
What do you like to do for fun in your spare time?
Outside of work I like to spend time with my family, travel and watch sports, primarily college basketball (Go ‘Cuse!!)
