Michel Grummel, CFE
Since 2009, Michel Grummel has seen the growth of Alvarez & Marsal in the Netherlands from one employee to its current staff of 25. Grummel serves as Managing Director and a member of the Global Executive Committee of Alvarez & Marsal’s Global Forensic and Dispute Services, and also leads the Netherlands Chapter as chairman of the board of directors.
Grummel considers finding the balance between his professional life and personal life to be one of his greatest achievements.
Why did you decide to enter the anti-fraud field?
After I started my career as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) I frequently ran into irregularities and fraudulent activities during annual audits. What I found most interesting is “doing the right thing as an auditor” and at the same time minimizing the impact for the company being audited as well as the company I worked for.
I also enjoy working between different stakeholders with opposite interests to resolve disputes.
What goals and initiatives do you have for the chapter?
We need to promote the ACFE brand in our region. The ACFE needs to be recognized as the authority and thought leader in the Netherlands in fraud and fraud prevention.
We plan to organize round tables with leading professionals in the area and create thought leadership, organize events for ACFE members, and broaden our member base by attracting a diverse group of professionals.
Another focus for the year is increasing our use of social media as a tool to reach current and prospective members.
We will also help ensure the 2014 ACFE European Fraud Conference in Amsterdam in March is successful.
Do you have any advice for other chapter leaders?
We set goals for two- and five-year periods. As a leader, you must work to get the best out of your fellow board members to achieve the goals set.
What do you like to do for fun in your spare time?
I have always enjoyed running, and I played handball throughout my school-age years.
I enjoy spending time with my family at our beach house, cycling and going for a drive in my classic car.
