Ritchie-Jennings Memorial Scholarship Application Period Open

The Ritchie-Jennings Memorial Scholarship application is now open and students have been encouraged to contact local ACFE Chapters in order to become acquainted with a CFE. The ACFE Foundation is asking for your help assisting students who wish to pursue a career in a fraud examination or similar path by providing letters of recommendation. Information can be placed on your Chapter website explaining how students can obtain a letter, or general information about the Ritchie-Jennings Memorial Scholarship.

Chapter Leader Profile: Melissa Smart, CFE, CFI

Melissa Smart, an Ohio native but Texan at heart, has been the president of the ACFE Central Ohio Chapter in Columbus, Ohio, since June of this year. Smart has served in many roles during her 16-year tenure at JPMorgan Chase & Co. and is now the manager of the Midwest Electronic Crimes Investigation team. When not at work or tending to chapter business, Smart enjoys spending time with her husband and their six children, cooking and cheering on the Ohio State Buckeyes.

James (Jim) Rough got his first taste of the destructive power of fraud while working his first job after college at Arthur Andersen. Watching the firm collapse because of its affiliation with Enron left a lasting impression on Rough. In the years since, Rough has been a champion of fraud prevention and ethics, a leader in his community and currently serves as treasurer of the Arizona Chapter. The California native is also an Associate Director in Navigant Consulting’s Disputes and Investigations practice.

In October of 2012 many Long Island communities were devastated by Hurricane Sandy. The Long Island shoreline was destroyed and many homes went with it. In the course of rebuilding many of our neighbors found themselves victims of fraudulent schemes. Vendor fraud was abundant, and the elderly were being taken advantage of from all angles. Long Island, already a victim to widespread fraud in various school systems, was being hit harder. We thought to ourselves, “What could CFEs do to help?”
